Description

The Safari Club after conducting many camel safaris and mobile desert camps in crowded and touristic places like Jaisalmer, Bikaner etc. Has finally chosen a permanent camp site-Osian-this permanent camp is first of its kind in India. Which makes it possible for even a single traveller to experience the desert and a camel safari near Jodhpur rather than travelling all the way to Jaisalmer. This ancient village is the gateway into the merciless thar desert and is legendary for its mesmerizing 6th / 8th century temples, sand-dunes and diversity of Rajasthani culture and tradition. Besides the comfortable camel safari one also gets to see proud local tribes--- Bishnois, Bhils, shepherds, potters, weavers etc. In their natural surroundings. And not to mention the various varieties of desert wildlife-the likes of bluebulls, gazelles, foxes, peacocks, partridges etc. Once at the camp -nestled in the dunes your host Reggie Singh grandson of Maharaj Ratan Singh a royal of Jodhpur will invite you for an evening of splendour with cocktails, folk entertainment and a semi formal candle lit dinner. The Safari Club, Jodhpur was started by Reggie Singh ( grandson of Maharaj Ratan Singh- a royal of Jodhpur, famous for his polo and shikar exploits) in 1993 after returning from The United States Of America , where he got his bachelors and masters degree in Marketing from Michigan. nitially the family house in Jodhpur was converted into a guest house and was named The Jodhpur Safari Club with 14 guest rooms. From here he conducted the famous Village Jeep Safaris, of Jodhpur. Since a child, Reggie had been fond of camping, and loved accompaning his family on hunts and safaris. His love for adventure and the wild had always lured him towards the camping business, and this lead to the importing of an African design tent ,which he later tastefully modified, by putting an ethnic colourful design on the inner sheeting . Slowly a Deluxe mobile outfit of 50 tents came into being- organising camps all over Rajasthan in Places like Pushkar, Ranthambore, Jaisalmer, Kumbhalgarh etc. Though wildlife was his first love, he saw the void and hugh demand for a professional (high end) Camel safari operator. So for two years he conducted Camel Safaris in Jaisalmer, as at that time Jaisalmer was potrayed as the "Mecca of camel safaris "in India. Never did he(or his guests) like the flat rocky terrain all along the safari route, which took them to the famous Sam and Kudi Sand dunes, nor was there much to see while on safari. And once one arrived at the dunes it was like a regular bazaar, hosting all the tourists of Jaisalmer joined by annoying touts, camel owners, beggars etc. The other factor which convinced him to leave Jaisalmer was that people dislike backtracking, and to get to Jaisalmer one had to go through Jodhpur, and then return back to Jodhpur, in order to get out to Jaipur or Udaipur. The time had come to look for a better, convenient, and interesting safari location. After six months of scouting out in the desert and scrutinising each and every area , Reggie came upon Osian-the gateway to the Thar Desert-only 60 kms from Jodhpur - which had so much more to offer, besides the famous 8th century Jain temples and the excellent sand dunes, the proximity to Jodhpur was a great advantage. The highest Sand dunes were bought. The Camel Camp, the first and only one of its kind, including a splendid swimming pool, is located on the highest privately owned sand dunes of the Thar Desert. This camp is beautifully furnished and even cozy in winters. Fortunately for him the camp and the concept have worked out more than well. Now that the Osian camp is up and running smoothly, Reggie has ventured out to Jaipur to do elephant related activities like Elephant Safaris, Elephant Polo etc. He has always wanted to recreate a little bit of the past splendor, and to revive memories of the regal bygone era with Elephants, and has brought along the birth of The Jaipur Elephant Camp, nestled in the hills of Amer. It is only 3 kms from the famous Amer fort of Jaipur. While running and operating his safaris and camps, he has also been invited as a safari/camp consultant by the ITC group for their camp at The Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon, The Oberois for their time share project with CCH out of Hong Kong, and the Meridian hotel for their Gokurna resort in Nepal. Reggies safari club still maintains its mobile outfit of 50 tents and now camps all over India.
